Meet Uncle Sam - America's Most Historic Christian Patriot
Who doesn't know that tall buggy whip gentleman with a high hat and striped pants?
We tend to associate Uncle Sam and the United States together, but where did Uncle Sam come from? Was there a real Uncle Sam?
Historians generally attribute the title to Samuel Wilson, a great patriot and an outstanding Christian man in his latter years. Samuel Wilson was from Troy, New York. Samuel Wilson was such a nice man it seemed like he could fit into anybody's family. He was a toll slender man and when the kids would see him walking down the street they would refer to him as “Uncle Sam”.
Samuel Wilson was the seventh child of a family of 13 children. He was born September 13th 1766, in Menotomy, (now Arlington) Massachusetts. His father was a farmer who had come to the New World is from Scotland.
Members of the Wilson family all learn to work hard and also learned the importance of being active in church. But they did more than attend church meetings. The poor families in the area new him well, for the Wilson's frequently carried fresh produce from their farm to feed the needy.
Samuel Wilson was just nine years old when the Wilson Farm was smack in the middle of one of the biggest battles of the revolutionary war in April 1775. His father, one of the Minutemen of Menotomy, fought the British right in the front yard of his own home.
Huddled with his brothers and sisters and in a clump of trees nearby, Sam watch the action. He was proud of his father for he understood how important freedom is. When the British retreated, Sam ran from the trees to his father and threw his arms around him.
After Independence was secured and peace ruled, Menotomy grew rapidly. Farmer Wilson love the simple life, however, so he moved his family to the quiet of a farm in Mason, New Hampshire.
In a small house In Mason, which is now open to the public, Sam Wilson grew to manhood. Here he finished schooling and learn the trade of bricklaying. Many of the buildings he worked on still stand in Mason to this day. Again he put his Christianity to practical use. Not only did he attended a small church in Mason, but it was Sam Wilson who gave Sunday school lessons to the children of the community each Sunday and every Wednesday “right after supper”.
A frugal man, Sam spend only what was necessary. But he wasn't miserly, for he gave of his means to help the needy. And he saved money too. By the time he was 23 he had saved enough money to move to Troy, New York, to start his own small brickyard.
During the next eight years he got married, owned a large brick yard, a brick laying company, a dock and the meet business-all products of working long and hard. During those eight years he had also built two small churches, put four needy young people through college, and helped hundreds of poor families in the emergencies they faced. It is safe to say he was a very generous and giving man and it's no wonder Samuel Wilson was so highly respected in his own time.
When the war of 1812 started, Government officials needed someone who would see to it that the American fighting troops in New York received meat and other foods enough of it and good quality as well. They new Samuel Wilson's reputation for honesty, they knew his love for his fellow man and his country. Since he was also in the meat business it seemed logical that they ask him to become a U.S. government meet inspector. Mr. Wilson accepted the position and did an outstanding job, even when it meant a financial loss for his own businesses in many times over. He was firm about quality, just as firm with his own packinghouse as with other companies. His firmness led to his famous trade mark nick name.
When a stranger came walking through Samuel Wilson's meat packing company one day, the packinghouse supervisor John Gleason was there to give the stranger a tour. Several barrels of beef were stacked up in the warehouse with the initials “U.S. Inspected” stamped on each barrel. The stranger ask Mr. Gleason what does all these barrels with U.S. stamped all over them mean? Mr. Gleason jokingly said "well the US stands for Uncle Sam, don't you know that Uncle Sam Wilson is feeding the army" and what had been intended as a joke caught on with the American public. From that day forward not only were the children using his nick name but everyone else was calling Samuel Wilson “Uncle Sam”.
Wilson was popular and seemed to epitomize the plain American citizen. He stood for so much, love for his country, for fellowman, success by hard-work.
By the end of 1813 uncle Sam's name was being used in newspapers, political leaflets, and all kinds of communications.
Toward the last 25 years of his life, a local resident said that Samuel Wilson had a real encounter the Lord. Ask how he knew this the man replied "Because 's his walk and his talk reflected the inner change that only God can make upon a man's heart". I believe Samual Wilson “Uncle Sam” must have had a real conversion experience to be born again.
At the age of 88 Samuel Wilson died in 1854, 100 years later I was born in 1954 to be the latest version of Samuel Wilson’s “Uncle Sam”. May many more of Samuel Wilsons nephews and nieces make an honest effort to live as this beloved patriot lived, honestly and unselfishly, with Love of country, of fellowman, and most certainly Love for God The Father, Jesus His Son and be led by the the Holy Spirit.
